The 5 advantages of drone inspections for construction progress reporting,
and the top methods.

Surveying large construction sites by drone offers many advantages. However, to get the most value from drone flights it pays to think about the type of data being captured and the methods used to review and report.

5 advantages

Here are the 5 advantages of using drone inspections to monitor your construction progress:

1

Measure actual progress versus work program, so that areas that are behind schedule can be easily identifiable and important milestones are not missed.

2

Limit labour and costs, by reducing expensive and laborious on-site surveys for example.

3

Stock control.

4

Reveal unforeseen safety risks, such as hazards, equipment or building damage and unknown site conditions.

5

Increase on-site security.

3 different methods of site surveying, and their benefits:

1

ORTHOGRAPHIC MAPS are the most common method of data capture and processing. Multiple overlapping images are ‘stitched’ together to make one large image of the site in a birds-eye view. Using this image, we can use AI to detect various conditions such as the quantity of materials on site or the m² of completed structure or earthworks for example. This can also be overlaid with past inspections and CAD drawings for easy progress visualisation. Additionally, mapping data can be used to analyse topography and calculate volumetrics on material piles etc.

2

INDIVIDUAL IMAGES are also required, especially to report on areas which are not well reported on a birds-eye view. With individual images you can report in more of a 3D environment and include items such as building facias, Protected trees, transmission towers, wind turbines, lifting cranes for example. Individual images also enable an increased level of detail to be captured on any part of the site.

3

HIGH RESOLUTION VIDEO is a powerful tool for reporting the stage of construction and site overview. It helps bring the site to life, and a site ‘fly through’ is a great addition to a management report or presentation.
